Frequently asked questions
What is Rogan art?
Rogan art is a textile painting tradition in which castor oil is boiled for hours into a thick, sticky paste, mixed with natural colours and drawn onto cloth with a single stylus, without tracing or stencils. In Nirona one family has kept it alive for eight generations, and was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2019 (Tanhadil).
How far is Nirona from Nakhatrana?
Nirona is 29 km east-north-east of Nakhatrana in a straight line, which makes it one of the easiest craft villages to reach from town. Road distance is longer; open the directions link for the current route. Nirona combines well with Dhinodhar Hill on the same morning, or with the drive north to the white Rann at Dhordo.
What crafts can you see in Nirona?
Nirona is known for three crafts. Rogan art is painted on cloth with a paste made from boiled castor oil. Bells are hammered by hand from scrap iron, coated with copper and brass, baked and tuned. Lacquerwork, made by the Vadha community, applies coloured lac to wood spun on a hand lathe. Ask before photographing and consider buying directly.
How should you visit a craft village near Nakhatrana?
Go on a working day in the morning or late afternoon, when artisans are most likely to be at work. Ask before taking photographs of people and their designs, and expect demonstrations to be followed by a chance to buy. Buying directly from the maker supports the craft, and prices for hand-made pieces reflect days of work.
What crafts are made in Bhadli and Moti Virani?
Both are bandhani villages. In Bhadli, Khatri families tie and dye cloth, now mostly silk, in a family business that goes back more than seven generations. In Moti Virani, three or four families still make woollen bandhani shawls and odhanis for Rabari and Bharwad herders (Khamir). Ask locally before driving out, so you arrive on a working day.
